Sint-Cathelijne

Sint-Cathelijne or Sint-Catharina is a former village in West Zeeland-Flanders, located about 1 km southeast of Oostburg.

The village was named for the first time in 1243 and the first church was probably built in the first quarter of the 13th century.

The village was drowned at the 1375 Storm Flood, but around 1400 the church was rebuilt. During the St. Elizabeth's flood of 1404, the village was re-submerged to be permanently destroyed during the Cosmas and Damian floods of 1477.

In 1604, the Cathelines were built on the remains of the village, as part of the Oostende Line. Also the Cathelijnepolder, which was dry in 1650, reminds of the former parish.

When in 1962 the remains of the church of Saint Cathelijne came to light, by moving a road, excavations were carried out. There were also digging and skeletons, but also parts of the foundation of the church, building materials such as Tournai stone and slate, and a foundation placed on deck sand, which had to be excavated three yards deep.
