Ion Maurer

Ion Gheorghe Maurer (1968)

Ion Gheorghe Maurer (Bucharest, September 23, 1902 - February 8, 2000) was a Romanian Communist politician. He was initially a lawyer and joined the Romanian Communist Party in 1936. In 1948 he was elected to the Central Committee of the RCP.

In 1957, Maurer was a member of the Romanian delegation to the United Nations in New York. From 1957 to 1958 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs.

From 1958 to 1961 he was President of the Great National Assembly, ie head of state. In that position, he visited many heads of state. From 1961 to 1972 he was prime minister. In March 1965 he was acting head of state for a short while.

Under Nicolae Ceauşescu, he hit more in the background. After a car accident in 1972, he was no longer able to perform his duties properly and he finished as a prime minister.

In March 1989, he signed (together with, inter alia, Ion Iliescu) a letter calling on Ceauşescu to conduct a more moderate policy. By Ceauşescu, the letter was interpreted as treason, leaving the signatories, including Maurer, under house arrest. After the fall of Ceauşescu (December 1989) the house arrest was lifted by the new regime.

Ion Maurer died at the age of 97.
