Sanjan is an ancient city located on the southern edge of the Karakum Desert, near the famous Merv town oasis. Topographically, Sanjan is located in the region of the Great Khorasan in Central Asia. It is politically today placed in the province of Mary in Turkmenistan. Stored by wikitesto

Along with Merv, Sanjan was an important stop and trade point along the southern silk road. Sanjan gained more importance after the Seleucids decided that Merv was the main city in the province of Margiana, a status he maintained during the successive era of the Partis (250 BC-226 AD) and Sasanidi (226-651). Extension of BMAC (Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture) Since the archaeological complex of Battria-Margiana is located in this place, Sanjan suggested that the Indoans, the largest of the branches that shared the proto-Indo-Europeans, were born here. According to Qian-san Sanjan, an epic poem written around 1600, the Zoroastrians who fled the Indian subcontinent in the 8th or 9th centuries to escape religious persecution settled in Sanjan (Gujarat). It is thought that these Zoroastrians, originally called Sanjana or Khorasani (today their descendants are known as Parsi), have given the name to the Indian settlement taking it from their home town.

Sanjan should not be confused with the Iranian province of Zanjan, or with its capital (similar to the phonetic point of view).
