Franz Grashof

Franz Grashof (Düsseldorf, July 11, 1826 - Karlsruhe, October 26, 1893) was a German engineer. He is mostly known for the number of Grashof.

At the age of fifteen he began to work as a mechanic. Meanwhile he was in a business school. Between 1844 and 1847, Grashof studied mathematics, physics and machine design in Berlin. Between 1849 and 1852 Grashof stayed in Dutch-India and Australia in succession. After returning to Berlin, he continued his studies.

Grashof was one of the founders and directors of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, the Association of German Engineers. To him is the highest distinction of this association, the Grashof-Gedenkmünze, named. This award has been won by Ferdinand von Zeppelin, Wilhelm Maybach, Carl Bosch and Ferdinand Porsche.
