Fruit wall

A fruit wall is a wall placed in a fruit orchard to protect the fruit trees. Fruit walls have been built since the Middle Ages, experimenting with different stands and shapes to facilitate fruit cultivation in the Netherlands.

Known forms of fruit walls, to a common wooden fence, are the snake wall, the sling wall, the retranchement wall, the pine wall and the zigzag wall, all of which are masonry. The walls were facing south and southeast, placing the fruit trees on the south side of the walls. Thus they stood optimally in the sun, the niches caused a small windy climate and the stones gave off after a long heat of heat. This arrangement hoped to prevent freezing of blossoms in spring, thus facilitating fruit cultivation in the cold Netherlands.

Fruit walls occur mainly in the Netherlands and England.
