Tooltip

A tooltip of a web browser that shows a hyperlink.

The tooltip (literally: advice on an object) is a common element of the user's graphical user interface. It is activated by the cursor, usually the mouse pointer. Moving the cursor over an object, without clicking it, opens a small "box" with additional information about the object itself. The box with detail information should be next to the object where you want to highlight more information. A further approach is to free the message location from the object where the mouseover is applied. Variantimodifica wikitesto

A very common variation, especially in older programs, is to show the description of the object in a status bar, but this type of descriptions are not usually called tooltip.

Another system aimed at solving the same problem was introduced on Macintosh computers from System 7, with the name of balloon help. In this case, the help text appeared in a bubble similar to that used in comic dialogue.

Another term for tooltip, used by Microsoft for end user documentation, is "ScreenTip" (literally: screen advice). Other designers wikitesto
