Battle at Freetown

Map

The Battle at Freetown was a breakdown between US colonists and a British warship during the American War of Independence. The events took place on May 25, 1778, in the part of Freetown that became Fall River later.

Although Freetown became known as a tory fortress, more and more townspeople became involved in the secession movement of 1776. On May 25, 1778, a British warship sailed the Taunton to Freetown. It was noted by a guardian and the ship was taken under fire by a number of local militias, which were answered with gunfire. A number of soldiers fled to visit the increasing anti-coral cities in southeastern Massachusetts. These soldiers burned a house, a grain and a sawmill and were subsequently taken under fire by the local militias of Freetown, who kept the river in the eye and notified by a guardian. The British soldiers then captured a local resident, burned off his property and returned to their ship. The prisoner was released after a few days and the British pulled back from Freetown. The militias of Freetown were helped by other militias of Tiverton settlers. The British lost two men, while the colonists did not lose members.
