Macario Melisurgo

Macario Melisurgo (Monemvasia, early 16th century - Naples, post 1575) was a Byzantine, metropolitan adventurer of the city of Monemvasia. Biography modifies wikitesto

Macario was an avid and ingenious adventurer. Prior to the Battle of Lepanto (1571) he agreed with the Lords of the Holy League, promising to lead a Byzantine revolt throughout the Peloponnesus in case the situation had bowed to the Turks. However, the crusaders did not continue the war after Lepanto and Melisurgo's plan was postponed indefinitely. Later he moved to Naples, where thanks to the help of some friends, spread some copies of Giorgio Sfranze's "Memorie". However, the book found little success, far from the great hope of Melisurgo, who wanted to shake the souls of the Italians to give birth to a new crusade. Macario then changed the text of Sfranze, increasing its historical reach throughout the Paleolithic dynasty and entering some personal notes in which he talked of the avenging of the Neapolitan and Italic sovereigns in general, clearly invented. Nevertheless, the book (later called Pseudo-Sfrances) had a remarkable success in all southern and central Italy, although this did not serve to mobilize the Christian armies against the Turks. The manuscript was published under the name of "Memorie" by Giorgio Sfranze in 1575. Bibliografiamodifica wikitesto
