Portrait of Agatha Bas

Portrait of Agatha Bas is a canvas oil painting (105,2x83,9 cm) made by Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn in 1641.

It's part of the Royal Family's Royal Collection and is kept in Buckingham Palace in London.

The work is signed and dated "REMBRANDT F 1641" and inscription "AE29".

From a dark and indefinite background emerges a female figure: Agatha Bas, wife of Nicolaes Van Bambeeck, a wealthy tissue merchant. Laying is not conventional: the woman seems to lean on the right edge of the canvas, which hides most of her left hand. His right hand holds a precious fan. The outfit distinguishes the woman's comfortable class, with the outfits of rich velvet, adorned with lavish laces, and a finely embroidered dress.

The portrait was performed along with her husband: in 1814 they definitively took different paths, this for London, Nicolaes for Brussels, where he is still. Bibliografiamodifica wikitesto
