Richard Gornall


Richard Gornall (1951) is a British botanist.

He is a senior lecturer at the University of Leicester. He is also the director of Harold Martin Botanic Garden, the botanical garden of the university.

Gornall is engaged in research into the taxonomy and evolutionary biology of the stone breeding family (Saxifragaceae). In addition, he researches the cytology and isozymes of Parnassia populations in the British Isles. He is interested in the biogeography of the Coriariaceae family. He holds a database of British Vascular Plants on behalf of the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI). In addition, he maintains a database with the number of chromosomes of these vascular plants.

In 1988, Gornall van de Linnean Society of London received the Bicentenary Medal, a distinction for a biologist younger than forty years due to outstanding performance. He was Chairman of the Botanical Society of the British Isles between 2003 and 2006.

Gornall has contributed to articles in scientific journals such as the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, Novon and Watsonia. Together with Richard Bateman and Pete Hollingsworth, he made the editors of the book Molecular Systematics and Plant Evolution that appeared in 1999.
