Bart Hendriks

Bartholomeus Theodorus (Bart) Hendriks (Nijmegen, April 16, 1915 - Overveen, June 6, 1944) was a resistance warrior in Nijmegen. He was a member of a resistance group in which a number of Nijmegen police officers were active in the Second World War. The group was arrested after an attack on traitor Ederveen on the Daalseweg on September 24, but Ederveen could escape and warn the Germans. After that, this resistance group was arrested on 27 September and fused by the Germans on 6 June 1944 in the dunes at Overveen.

In Nijmegen five members of the resistance group were honored with a street name in the Verzetshelden neighborhood in the Kwakkenberg district. The other four members are: Wim Beerman, Albert Marcusse, Herman Oolbekkink and Cees de Jong. The latter was not a police officer but a commercial agent, but also a member of the resistance group.

Hendriks was married and had two children. He served as a guardian at the police.

In the Verzetshelden neighborhood is a monument to the five resistance fighters in the form of a pelican image, which carries own blood to the boy in times of need, and symbolizes self-sacrifice.
