Frederik IV of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg

Frederik IV (Gotha, November 28, 1774 - there, February 11, 1825) was the last duke of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg from 1822 to 1825.

He was the son of Duke Ernst II and Maria Charlotte van Saxen-Meiningen, daughter of Anton Ulrich of Saxony-Meiningen. After a military training he pursued Napoleon's field trips. He became so severely wounded that he never healed again. He followed in 1822 his older brother August, who did not leave any sons, as a duke of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg. Because he converted Catholicism in 1807, he had to resign his church power to the synod. He died unmarried after a long sick bed on February 11, 1825. Since he was the last male cousin from the house of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg, his country was divided into Saxony-Gotha in 1826, which was merged with Saxony-Coburg to Saxony-Coburg and Gotha, and Saxony-Altenburg, which became independent.
