John Bihari

John Bihari

János Bihari (1764 - 1827) was a Hungarian gypsy physiist who enjoyed his fame in his time. He was from the Pozsony district (Bratislava) in present-day Slovakia. He was invited to his orchestra for numerous public and private parties and banquets. He even played at the Vienna Congress in 1814. He created a musical idiom, the verbunkos style, which is still part of the Hungarian music tradition. Originally, the verbunkos was the military music played in the recruitment of new recruits. Franz Liszt admired Bihari enormously and wrote a lot about him in his book Des Bohémiens et de leur musique and Hongrie.
