Joseph Rome


Dom Remacle Rome, born as Joseph Rome (Stavelot, August 30, 1893 - 1974) was a Belgian benedictine and zoologist who specializes in the study of the ostracoda (mussel crayfish).

In 1911 he joined the Benedictines of the Abbey of Maredsous and took over the monastery Remacle. In 1932 he became a curator of the abbey museum and a few years later, on the recommendation of F. Demanet of the Museum of Natural Sciences, he was asked to become a curator of the Museum of Geology of the University of Leuven. For forty years he was employed by the university, and explained to the study of the ostracoda. He was a car dancer in this field and has 25 publications on his name, including a work on the Tanganyikame ostracoda and one about the anatomy of the ostracoda.

His collection is kept in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. Externe link
