Lovenpolder

The Lovenpolder is a polder north of Hoek, belonging to the Polders between Axel, Terneuzen and Hoek.

The polder was created by damming the salt marshes of the Braakman. The patent for embankment was granted in 1542 by Emperor Charles V to Jan van der Walle, in order to estimate at least pericle of fortune, 2,500 measured in Asseneder craft. This led to the Lovenpolder in 1543. It is 460 ha in size and a number of creeks have been reclaimed, of which the Voorste Kreek and Achterste Kreek are the most important. Together with the almost simultaneously dammed Koudepolder, this polder formed an island until 1615.

In the polder are the hamlets Paradijs, Den Abeele and Hoogedijk. The hamlet Boerengat, located in the far northwest of the polder, has almost completely disappeared because of the industry and the associated infrastructure. 51° 19′ NB, 3° 47′ OL
