Lemuel Francis Abbott

Portrait of Admiraal Robert Calder by Lemuel Francis Abbott (1797)

Lemuel Francis Abbott (County Leicestershire, ca. 1760 - London, December 5, 1802) was an English 18th century portrait painter. He was the son of a spiritual.

Abbott was a pupil of Francis Haymans (from 1775) and made his name as a portrait painter in marine circles. His most famous portrait is probably that of Horatio Nelson that hangs in the Terracotta Room in 10 Downing Street, the residence of the English Prime Minister.

He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, but never became a member. He became mad at about forty years and was cared for by doctor Thomas Munro, the chief physician at Bethlem Hospital and a specialist in mental illness. Munro had also treated King George III (1738-1820).
