Morganza Spillway

USACE opened a number of Morganza Spillway stoves on May 14, 2011 The Atchafalaya River as emergency escape for the Mississippi Expected flooded areas following opening Morganza Spillway

The Morganza Spillway is a water-based work-over-controlled emergency transmission between Mississippi and Morganza landing area in the state of Louisiana, on the western bank upstream of Morganza. The dam is managed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Spillway's function is to control the flow of Mississippi near Baton Rouge and New Orleans and, if necessary, drain water along the Atchafalaya River and surrounding Atchafalaya Swamp. In this way, the major cities and industrial areas are protected, and floods and avulsion prevent the Mississippi riverbed from being detached and the water would seek new routes no longer along the main port, the port of South Louisiana.

The construction of the Spillway was completed in 1954 and the construction was used only in 1973 in the 20th century. With many dams one can discharge up to 17,000 m³ / s of Mississippi water. On May 13, 2011, it was decided to open the thrues a second time since commissioning to relieve the highly swollen Mississippi. This decision is usually only taken when the flow rate exceeds 42,000 m³ / s. Based on flood simulations, we chose to open 25% of their maximum capacity in 2011.
