Peeter Joseph de Smedt (Opwijk, August 8, 1804 - 13 February 1889) was a mayor of the Belgian municipality of Opwijk and brewery in De Ster brewery for half a century.

He was born in a family who had various public functions since the 16th century: meisenier, armmeester, churchmaster, ships and mayor in and around Opwijk. He was himself the son of Jan Baptist de Smedt (1743-1827), church master and councilor of Opwijk from 1818 to 1827.

Peeter Joseph de Smedt became ships of the municipality in 1835 and subsequently became mayor in 1838. A position he fulfilled until his death in 1889. In 1888 he was celebrated for his golden office anniversary. In addition, he was a member of the provincial council of the province of Brabant. He was married to Petronella Juliana Staes with whom he had 11 children. Political family

He was the great-grandfather of the later bishop of Brugge Emiel Joseph De Smedt and the ancestor of the later mayors of Opwijk.

The family was often related - by marriages - with other mayors and brewers from the region.
