Uttu was the weaver's goddess in Sumerian mythology, daughter of Enki and Ninkurra. It was depicted as a weaver spider, who weighed the net of life.
According to the most popular myth, Enki tries to seduce Uttu but without success. Afterwards, Uttu consults with Ninhursag ('Enki's Bride'), looking at her father's whimsical and promiscuous nature. In another version of the myth, Uttu is enthralled and pregnant by Enki, but Ninhursang removed Enki's seed from Uttu's womb and sowed it to the ground from which eight plants sprouted. Subsequently, the eight plants were eaten by Enki and from there were born eight minor gods, as recounted in the myth of Enki and Ninhursag.
