Church of San Tommaso Becket (Aulla)

The church and the bastion

The Church of Saint Thomas Becket or St. Anthony's Church is a sacred building located in Pallerone, near Aulla.

The church is known with the title of Sant'Antonio but its ancient owner is San Tommaso Becket of Canterbury, whose death was echoed in medieval Europe. It is not known the date of its foundation that may be prior to the first mention in 1450: at that age a Madonna and Child belonged to it that had been placed in the central niche of the facade.

The history of the church, as well as its architectural structure, has always been linked to the destinies of the Malaspinian castle and the hamlet, known as the Verdentro, circular, which resembles the wall of the Pallerone castle castle. It was restored in 1704 in Baroque forms typical of the smaller churches of the Lunigiana countryside. Links externalize the wikitesto
