After having been forced to leave his country, he lived in a refugee camp in Chad. As an interpreter and guide of Western reporters and humanitarian organizations, he has crossed the border several dozen times to return to Sudan, endangering his life to give voice to those who did not. In 2006, during one of these missions, he was captured, imprisoned and tortured. After his release, he was welcomed into the United States as a refugee.
