Davy Jones (sage)

Davy Jones is a figure from a saga that was formerly seized by sailors to confound each other. Who or what Davy Jones is precise differs by story, but he is usually seen as a kind of devil or god of the sea.

Directly linked to Jones is his "coffin" or "safe", Davy Jones' Locker. This term was used by seamen as an idiot for the seabed; a place where people who died at sea would come true, after which Davy Jones would have their soul. Seamen were never seen back to death for their homes, so the men did their best to safely bring their companions and the ship home. History Davy Jones as a monster, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, Tobias Smollett, 1751. Illustration by George Cruikshank in 1832.

Davy Jones's oldest description dates back to 1751, by Scottish author Tobias Smollett. In his book The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, he describes Davy Jones as the monster ruling all the evil spirits of the sea. He also mentions that Davy Jones is seen in different ways. Only one of these shapes is described by Smollett; a creature with three rows of teeth, horns, a tail, and blue smoke coming out of its nostrils. Inspiration

It is not known where Davy Jones's saga comes from.

In one of the best-known stories, Jones would have been the barter's outfit, who drunk and climbed certain customers, to later unlock the unconscious body in a ship in London's port. After the bankruptcy of his bar, he decided to steal a ship and become a pirate. He threw off the Atlantic Ocean to hijack ships, once beheaded or hijacked the bulk of the crew and left the remaining crew in order to let them survive with the ship. Ultimately, under mysterious circumstances, Davy would have sold his soul to the Devil. After his death, his mind would be taken by the sea.

Another story tells Davy Jones to be Vanderdecken, the captain of the infamous ghost ship De Vliegende Hollander. It is also heard that Davy Jones is another name for Satan. Also see
