Marc de Hemptinne


Count Marc de Hemptinne (Ghent, April 6, 1902 - April 1, 1986) was a Belgian physicist.

Marc de Hemptinne was the son of Alexandre de Hemptinne, professor of chemistry at the Catholic University of Leuven. Marc studied a civil engineer in chemistry at the University of Ghent and obtained a doctorate in science in 1926. From 1929 he was connected to Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

The Hemptinne was a pioneer of molecular spectroscopy and performed groundbreaking work in the search for isotopes of hydrogen and carbon. This research gave him the Francquiprijs in 1948.

After the war he was head of the research group who takes a cyclotron in Heverlee. Between 1954 and 1963 he served as a board member of the research center for energy in Mol.

In 1972, the Hemptinne went out with emeritaat.
