Francesco III Crispo

Francesco III Crispo (1483 - Candia, August 15, 1511) was the nineteenth Duke of the Duke of Ducato from the 1500's. Biography modifies wikitesto

He was born of John III and a woman whose name was ignored. When his father died during a revolt on July 1, 1494, he was still underage, so on 14 October the Senate of the Serenissima recognized him as Duke, but entrusted power to a Venetian administrator.

In 1496 he married Caterina Loredan and on October 24, 1500, he obtained the direct government of the island. Almost nothing is known about his policy; of course, under him the Duchy was no longer attacked by the Turks.

Marin Sanudo notes that since 1509 he was suffering from a serious mental illness, which culminated on August 15, 1510, when, during a crisis of madness, he killed his wife. Arrested and handed over to the Venetians, he was translated to Candia where he died exactly a year later for violent fevers.

He left two children: Catherine, married to Cos Giovanni Luigi Pisani, and Giovanni, his successor to the Duchy. Bibliografiamodifica wikitesto
