Monument to African Rebirth

Monument to African Rebirth

The Monument to African Rebirth is a bronze image on a 100 meter high hill in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. The monument has a height of 50 meters and shows an African family consisting of a young woman, a man and, in the left arm of the man, a child pointing his arm towards the sea.

The image was designed by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, based on an idea of President Abdoulaye Wade. It was built by North Korean workers of the Mansudae Overseas Projects company over a three-year period. The official disclosure was in April 2010, 50 years after Senegal became independent of France.

The Monument to African Rebirth has been criticized for several reasons, among other things because President Wade sees the work as his intellectual property and therefore claims 35% of the proceeds. The criticism also focuses on the cost, about 15 million euros, and the idolatry of the statue and the scarce dressed people who would not fit in largely Islamic Senegal.
