Palatinate-Kleeburg

Palts-Kleeburg was a side branch of the Palts-Zweibrücken house.

Kleeburg, once owned by the Hohenbourg family, was transferred by the emperor in 1504 to the paltsgraaf of Palts-Zweibrücken. After the death of paltsgraaf Johan van Palts-Zweibrücken in 1604 he was succeeded by his eldest son Johan. His third son Johan Casimir got as a puppet of Kleeburg (French: Cleebourg). The marriage of Johan Casimir with Catharina of Sweden enabled him to start building the castle of Catharinenbourg in 1619. Their oldest son Karel became King of Sweden as Charles X in 1654. King Karel then transferred Kleeberg to his younger brother Adolf Johan. After the extinction of Palts-Zweibrücken in 1681 King Karel XI was also ruling ruler in Zweibrücken. The Principality, however, was occupied by France since 1677, and only in 1693 the king was allowed to take possession of his inheritance. The Kleeburg branch died in 1731 with palace poop Gustaaf Emanuel van Palts-Zweibrücken.
