In 1970, Cliff Williams started his first band, Home, with singer Mick Stubbs, guitarist Laurie Wisefield and drummer Mick Cook. In 1970, they concluded a deal with Epic Records, and next year their debut album, entitled Pause for a hoarse horse, was released. In November 1971, Home could perform in Led Zeppelin's premiere at the Wembley Empire Pool, on the second day of Led Zeppelins Electric Magic performances, featuring both circus acts and rock bands.
Home released a second album in 1972; The song 'Dreamer' of this album was ranked 41th in the UK Album Charts. In 1973 a third album followed, but this was not a success. When the British singer-songwriter Al Stewart suggested that Home support his first American tour, Mick Stubbs left the band. The others formed 'The Al Stewart Band'. Soon Williams left the band, then to form the band 'Bandit' in 1974.
Bandit already got a contract with Arista Records and released the bandit in 1977. The band members were Cliff Williams, singer Jim Diamond (later successful as soloist), and drummer Graham Broad (later at Bucks Fizz and Roger Waters's band played). AC/DC
At the AC / DC bass player Mark Evans was fired shortly after recording the studio album Let There Be Rock (1977), after which Williams followed him. He participated in the Let There Be Rock tour, and made his studio debut on the studio album Powerage (1978). Williams is renowned for playing solid but simple bass lines that follow the guitar lines, but also by providing backing vocals with battle guitarist Malcolm Young.
At the end of August 2016, Williams announced that he wanted to retire on the official Facebook page of AC / DC. In September 2016 he made his last performance. He had taken the band for more than 39 years, and after Angus Young was the longest member of the band as it occurred in 2016.
