Antoine Mahaut

Antoine Mahaut or Anton, Antonio Mahault, Mahoti or Mahout (Namen?, 1719? - ca.1785) was a fluteist, editor and composer. Life and work

Mahaut lived and worked from 1737 to 1777 in Amsterdam. To avoid his creditors, he went to Paris, where he had stayed before, in 1740 and 1755. He also visited Dresden. Mahaut spent his last years in a monastery in France.

From Mahaut appeared in Amsterdam trio's with flutes, duets and sonatins for flute. His symphonies are stylistically related to those of Carl Philipp Stamitz and François-Joseph Gossec.

In his work, a magazine, Maendely's musical pastime, consisting of new Dutch canzons or singing songs, was brought to music in a dazzling fashion with a basso continuo. Meede very aptitude to play on the clave cimbael, violin, flute, oboe and other instruments. The nine parts appeared in the period 1751-1752 containing arias and songs of his hand in Italian style.

In 1759, he published a Nouvelle Méthode pour apprendre and Peu de Temps and Jouer La Flute Traversière: New way to learn the flute in a short while. Preview
