Brahmadeva

Brahmadeva (1060 - 1130) was an Indian mathematician.

Brahmadeva was the son of Candrabudha. His family originated from the Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh in northern India. His family belonged to the highest castle, the Brahman.

He was the author of the Karanaprakasa, a comment on Aryabhatiya of Aryabhata. The content of the Karanaprakasa is about trigonometry and its application in astronomy. The 'Karanaprakasa' consists of nine chapters and follows the 'Aryabhatiya'. Subjects in this work include trigonometry and its application in astronomy, the astronomical length of the planets, sun and moon eclipses, the washing of the moon and the conjunction of the planets.

Various comments on the 'Aryabhatiya' were popular in different parts of India. Brahmadeva's comment seems to have been popular in Madras, Mysore and Maharastra. The main comments on the 'Aryabhatiya' were in turn the starting point for further follow-up comments, and this also happened with the 'Karanaprakasa'. Until the seventeenth century there were comments on this work of Brahmadeva.
