Else Cage

Else Cooi (Lutjegast, February 2, 1932 - Los Altos, September 14, 2001) was a Dutch chemist who became acquainted with his work on transistor technology and as deputy director of the Philips Physical Laboratory. biography

Else Kooi studied chemistry at the University of Groningen. After graduating, he joined the Philips Natural Sciences Laboratory (NatLab) in Eindhoven in 1956 on transistor technology. In 1966, he found the LOCAL Oxidation of Silicon (LOCOS) semiconductor manufacturing process, an efficient method for making inter-insolutions between single-chip transistors used in any modern MOS IC.

From 1975 to 1979 he was Deputy Director of the NatLab, under his responsibility, a number of chemical groups. In 1979, with the creation of Philips Research Laboratories Sunnyvale, he moved to California with Silicon Valley, returning to IC technology.

Else Cooi is the name maker of the annual Else Cooi Prize for researchers or key initiators for the Dutch semiconductor industry. He received an honorary doctorate from Delft University of Technology in 2000.
