Gerrit Jacob Boekenoogen

Gerrit Jacob Boekenoogen (Wormerveer, April 18, 1868 - Leiden, August 26, 1930) was a linguist who published a Zaans dictionary.

Boekenoogen was born in Wormerveer, as a merchant's son. After primary school and high school, Boekenoogen studied Dutch language and literary students at the University of Amsterdam. When he left midway, his teacher J. Verdam went to Leiden University. Boekenoogen followed his teacher to Leiden, and studied in 1893. He devoted himself to his dissertation, and graduated in 1896 with cum laude on a dissertation entitled The Zaanse volkstaal. Contribution to the vocabulary knowledge in North Holland, a trade edition of which appeared in 1897.

Boekenoogen was editor of the Dutch Language Dictionary until his death. In addition, he was engaged in fairy tales, rhymes and folk stories. Between 1891 and 1930, Boekenoogen made a collection of over 9000 folk songs, including many children's songs. The collection is owned by the Meertens Institute under the name: Handschriftcollectie van G.J. Boekenoogen. The songs are unlocked in the Dutch Liederenbank.

He also participated in the series of Dutch Folk Books of the Dutch Literature Society.

In addition, Boekenoogen introduced a large collection of folk books, paying special attention to the Mother's Fairy tales and the folk story Tijl Owl Mirror. A significant part of it (500 titles) was purchased by the Dutch Literature Society after its death, and described in a separate catalog of the Collection-Books Books (1931).

Boekenoogen remained single for all his life. He died at the age of 62 in Leiden and was buried at the Leiden cemetery Rhijnhof. The grave has now been cleared.

In 2004, the third Dutch revised edition, supplemented and edited by Klaas Woudt, appeared in the Dutch language. Also see
