Next (India)

The sixteen Mahajanapadas of ancient India in 600 BC

Next was an ancient kingdom of central-western India governed by the Yadava war caste. Ujjayani (Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh) was its capital along the river Kshipra, a tributary of the Charmanuati River, which in turn is an affluent of the Ganges River. The Ujjayani of the past is currently known as Ujjain, the city of Madhya Pradesh. Vasudeva Krishna and Bala Rama had their education at Ujjayani.

Next it was divided between north and south, along the river of Vetravati. Initially Mahissati (Sanskrit: Mahishamati) was the capital of the South Forward, and Ujjaini (Sanskrit: Ujjayini) was north, but at the time of Mahavira and Buddha it was from the United Kingdom. The kingdom of Avanti corresponded vastly to the modern Malwa region, and Nimar (parts of Madhya Pradesh).

Next was an important center of Buddhism. King Nandivardhana of Avanti was defeated by King Shishunaga of Magadha. Next he later became part of the Magadha empire.
