Carlos van Bourbon (1938-2015)

Carlos Maria Alfonso of Bourbon (Lausanne, January 16, 1938 - Retuerta del Bullaque, October 5, 2015) was a baby of Spain (and, according to some, Duke of Calabria and Prince of Both Sicilies).

He was the second child and the eldest son of Alfons Maria of Bourbon and Alice of Bourbon-Parma. He was appointed by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco along with his cousin Juan Carlos after the Second World War as a possible throne of succession on the Spanish throne. This made Franco especially to satisfy the Spanish monarchists.

After the death of his founder Ferdinand, Carlos's father claimed the leadership of the House of Bourbon Sicily, as well as the grandmother of the Neolithian obedience of the Holy Military Constantine Order of Saint Joris and took the titles of the Duke of Calabria and Count of Caserte. This claim was immediately contested by his uncle Reinier, who thought Charles had abandoned his rights of him and his descendants. Within the family, Reinier's claim was generally accepted as legally valid. Nevertheless, Alfons claimed to be entitled to the title. These claims were later claimed by Carlos, who was recognized by his cousin king Juan Carlos on April 8, 1984. The princes from the house of both Sicily, as well as his father-in-law, the Count of Paris, did not recognize claims.

He became a spouse of Spain by Royal Decree of 16 December 1994. According to the Spanish protocol, he was Z.K.H. Infant Don Carlos, Prince of Both Sicilies, Duke of Calabria.

In 1965, Carlos married Anne van Orléans, daughter of Henri d'Orléans, Count of Paris, and Isabella of Orléans-Bragança. The couple got five children.
