Jan Willemen


Jan Willemen (Dongen, February 27, 1912 - there, March 17, 1985) was a glassier and graphist at Dongen. He married Lea van den Bergen in 1949. The couple got six children. Lifecycle

From 1942-1945 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg, where he was a student of, among others, Jan van Delft. He also attended classes at Gerrit de Morée and Dio Rovers in Breda.

From 1946-1949 he studied at the Royal National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp and in 1947 he participated in a first group exhibition, in Breda. His first public work dates from the same year and involves a mural in the Sint Elisabeth guest house in Dongen.

In 1970 he became a teacher at Kennedy Atheneum, but when Jan Huet died in 1976, Jan Willemen received the request to take over his work for the Hoogstraten church. Also afterwards, there were several overview exhibitions.

Jan Willemen died suddenly in the Dongen St. Joseph Church. He also left behind many designs never again. Work

The oeuvre of Jan Willemen is extensive. Most of his work is catholic-religiously tinted. Its stained glass windows are inspired by Romanesque and Gothic windows in French churches. He made windows for church buildings, but also smaller windows for individuals. Externe link
