Peter Tak


Peter Tak (1944) is Professor Emeritus at the University of Nijmegen and internationally accredited expert in the field of criminal justice.

He studied law at Tilburg University (Netherlands) and at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg i.Br., Germany). He later graduated in comparative criminal law (1973) at Tilburg University. From 1973-1976 he was Attorney General at the Courts of Hertogenbosch (Netherlands). Then he was professor of law at Radboud University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands (1976-2012).

He wrote more than thirty books, some of which were translated into Japanese and Chinese. His publications include a two-tier study in English to the duties and powers of the prosecutor in the countries of the European Union.

Prof. Tak regularly performs for radio and television, mostly to explain criminal matters, including the Deventer murder case, the prosecution of the Hells Angels and the case against the Hofstad group. He is editor of Dutch jurisprudence and foreign correspondent of three international legal journals. Numerous articles about Dutch and foreign criminal justice systems have been published in national and foreign reviews. His interests lie in different areas, such as medical-legal issues, organized crime and foreign criminal justice systems. Professor Peter Thanked as a witness expert on Dutch and foreign criminal law to Dutch, German and British courts.

Prof. Tak is Secretary General of the International Penal and Penitentiary Foundation, one of the major international criminal organizations that have a consultative status at the UN and the Council of Europe.

On December 12, 2008, Peter went with Emeritaat.
