Strimon


The Strimon (Bulgarian: Струма, Stroema; Greek: Στρυμόν; Turkish: Karasu) is a river in Bulgaria, Greece and Macedonia

The river runs from the Vitoshage Mountains in Bulgaria, flows more than 400 kilometers to the south and flows into the Aegean Sea. The tributaries belong to the Rila.

Coal is won in the valley in Bulgaria. The Greek part of the valley is dominated by agriculture. The ancient Greek city of Amphipolis was founded at the mouth of the river in the Aegean Sea. In 1014 the Battle of Kleidion was fought by this river.
