Achtermeer is the first known polder in the Netherlands and dates back to 1533. The originally small lake was located south of Alkmaar. A patent until the drying was granted on 20 November 1532 to Jan Janz, bailiff of the Nieuwburg, and to Willem Janz., Bailiff of Alkmaar.

In 1573 the polder was put under water for a short time. Partly because of this, the Spaniards, who had their encampment there, had to give up the siege of Alkmaar.

From 1709 the pumping station of the Achtermeer also keeps the polder Overdie dry. Since then, the polder Overdie-Achtermeer has also been mentioned. From 1913 to 1988 a diesel pumping station pounded the polder.
