Porta Nuova in the western direction

The Porta Nuova (Dutch: Nieuwe Poort) is a city gate in the Sicilian capital of Palermo. The gate is built on the north side of the Palazzo dei Normanni and through the gate is the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, one of the main streets of the historic center. The counterpart of the Porta Nuova is the Porta Felice, on the other side of the Corso. On the other side of the gate, in the direction of Monreale, the Corso Calatafimi runs. History

The Porta Nuova was built in 1583 on behalf of the Spanish deputy Marcantonio Colonna in honor of the visit of Emperor Karel V to Palermo in 1535.

The tower completely erupted in 1667 due to a gunpowder explosion. In 1669 the tower was rebuilt by the Sicilian architect Gaspare Guercio. At this rebuild, the loggia and pyramid-shaped roof were added to the gate.
