Rainer Kussmaul


Rainer Kussmaul (Mannheim, June 3, 1946 - Freiburg im Breisgau, March 27, 2017) was a German violinist and conductor.

Kussmaul received his first violin lessons from his father. After his study in Mannheim and Carl-Flesch-student Ricardo Odnoposoff, the Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart was Kussmaul award winner during international competitions, both as a soloist and with his piano trio, the Stuttgarter Klavier Trio. He was active all over the world as a soloist and chamber music.

Kussmaul was an internationally sought-after teacher. Since 1977 he was a lecturer at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and was the leader of the Carl-Flesch Academy in Baden-Baden. From 1993 to 1997 he was the concert master of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Since that time he led the Berliner Barock soloists. Students of Kussmaul in Freiburg founded the Freiburger Barockorchester, which has become an internationally renowned ensemble.

His brother Jürgen Kussmaul (1944) is a well-known violinist and ever worked with Anner Bijlsma.

He died at cancer at the age of 70.
