A file server (or file server) is a server that makes Network Attached Storage available to clients. Commonly used protocols are FTP, HTTP, NFS and SMB. File servers can use RAID to increase the speed and reliability of reading and writing.

A file server should ensure that files are transferred to the client completely and without a single error. This is in contrast to a streaming server as used in streaming media. In that case, it is less important that all images are rendered flawless, but delivering a continuous flow - a video without hapsings - is central ( download versus streaming).
