A Directorate-General (DG) is a Directorate-General with a Head Office.
In the Netherlands, ministries often have different directorates-general who make policies, which are then carried out by an implementing organization (for example, Rijkswaterstaat is partly directed by the Directorate-General for Space and Water, and the Directorate-General for Telecommunications and Post makes the policy which performs the Consumer and Market Authority).
The European Commission has several executive directorates-general including the Directorate-General for Competition.
