In 1544 he was martyred by barbarian pirates led by Ariadeno Barbarossa, who devastated the Tyrrhenian coast of the present province of Messina. He was killed with his son, Giuseppe Scolarici, along with whom he went to save the Sacred Species and the holy oils kept in the Badia Church, where Piraino's orthodox celebrations were celebrated. The Orthodox Church in Italy venerates both as saints, being martyrs of faith.
