Mehmet Ali Talat


Mehmet Ali Talat (Kyrenia, July 6, 1952) is a Turkish Cypriot politician. From April 2005 to April 2010 he was president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This Republic is not recognized by any country except Turkey. However, the president of the TRNC is accepted by the UN as a representative of the Turkish Cypriot community in negotiations on the political future of the island. After Talat, then leader of the Left-wing Turkish Republic Party, was elected by a majority of 55% to (Vice) President during the (Vice) Presidential elections on April 17, 2005, on April 25, he followed Rauf Denktaş as the most powerful man of Northern Cyprus. The person who fulfills the president's function of the TRNC must give up his party political commitment.

On April 18, 2010, he was defeated by the nationalist nationalist Derviş Eroğlu of the National Unity Party, who followed him on April 24, at the presidential elections.
