Ondine's curse


Ondine's curse is a rare condition in which the patient is constantly breathing consciously. The respiration is regulated autonomously by the body, but can also be consciously controlled. The first method has been done with this disease.

CCHS can occur with Hirschsprung's disease. This is a congenital neurological disease of the large intestine, in which the nerves that cause the contractor (peristaltic) of (part of) the colon are not present or malfunctioning. This leads to constipation and eventually to an enlarged colon (megacolon congenitum = congenital enlargement of the colon). Both diseases involve a disorder of the autonomic nervous system (the self-regulating nervous system, where a person normally has no influence) and sometimes co-exist (comorbidity).

The name of Ondine's name comes from the myth of Ondine, a female water spirit who fell in love with a knight. The knight was unfaithful to her, and she cursed him so that he had to keep awake for the rest of his life to get breathtaking.
