Berenstraat

The Berenstraat is an originally medieval street in the Dutch city of Steenbergen. The street connects the Geert Vinckestraat with the Blauwstraat and runs more or less parallel to the Kaaistraat, the central street of the city.

There are two possible statements of the name. The Berenstraat is first mentioned in 1431, when a certain Jan de Bere sells a house. It is possible that he (or his family) has borrowed his name on the street. However, in the 1431 document, the Bairstrate ('Baarstraat') is discussed, which may mean unfinished, open or unbuilt. That could also be the origin of the name, with the name of Jan de Bere as later folk etymology. Also see
