Cleuasmo is the rhetorical figure that consists in the act of the orator to quell, thus seeking, with a profession of humility, to attract the sympathies of the auditorium.
The name derives from the Greek verb χλευάζω, chleuazo, which means "diminish", "diminish".
A wonderful example of cleuasmo is represented by the Provincial Letters of the French philosopher Blaise Pascal, a work in which the author questions the wise with simulated humility.
