Colijn van Rijssele (Brussels, 2nd half 15th-16th centuries) was a South Dutch poet. He joined the conference of the Our Lady of Sorrows in 1498. Van Rijssele was the writer of The Mirror of Memories, that in 1561 in Haarlem by Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert was issued to an old worn copy. It was then reprinted in 1577 and 1617. It can be seen as the oldest civilian drama in European literature. The piece consists of six batement games divided between 6169 verses and is situated in Middelburg and Dordrecht.
The story is about Middelburg merchant son Dierick den Hollander who has a relationship with the simple linen listener Catharina Steermertens. The parents of merchant son are having trouble and send their son to Dordrecht. When they finally go over it is late, the son is sick and dies. The linen listener dies as well when she dies. The moral of the story is mint bi mate; Overtime is never good, neither in love.
In 1913 the piece was rewritten and reissued by Margaretha Wilhelmina Immink. Externe link
