Hartman van Heldrungen (? - Akko, 19 August 1282) was Grand Master of the German Order from 1273 until his death in 1282. biography
Hartman van Heldrungen was a Reichstag from Thuringia. In 1234 he became a member of the German Order together with his Herman. In 1238 Van Heldrungen was appointed commander in Saxony. He was also part of the negotiators who ensured that the Order of the Sword Brothers joined the German Order. Van Heldrungen soon climbed into the ranks of the Order that he became one of the great master's confidants. Between 1261 and 1266 he was great commander on the order. When Hanno van Sangershausen died in 1273, Van Heldrungen was appointed the new grandmaster.
During his reign it was relatively quiet and Hartman van Heldrungen encouraged the colonization of Prussia and Lithuania. Under his government he also gained more land in Pomerania. In 1282, Hartman van Heldrungen dies and is succeeded by Burchard van Schwanden. Sources
