Hermann Jónasson
Hermann Jónasson (Reykjavik, December 25, 1896 - January 22, 1976) was an Icelandic politician for the (liberal agricultural) Progressive Party, from which he was chairman from 1944 to 1962.
Hermann Jónasson was twice the prime minister of his country. A first time from 1934 to 1942. In this government he served as Minister of Justice and also Minister of Agriculture in 1941-1942. In the years before the Second World War, Iceland was under pressure diplomatically from both the United Kingdom and Nazi Germany. After the start of the war and the occupation of Denmark by the Germans, relations between the two countries shattered and took control of Iceland for its foreign relations, previously observed by Denmark. The United Kingdom occupied Iceland in May 1940.
Hermann Jónasson was a second-time prime minister from 1956 to 1958, after his Progressive Party and the Social Democratic Party had formed an alliance against the Conservative Independence Party before the elections. The alliance formed a coalition government with the "People's Alliance", which saw the first left-wing Icelandic government. However, this government was accustomed to the United States and NATO partners.
Hermann Jónasson was the father of former Prime Minister Steingrímur Hermannsson. Also see
