An independent student is an understanding of student finance in Flanders. The statute of independent student is obtained if the student can prove a certain income for 12 different months in a period of 2 consecutive years, which are two consecutive years between the year in which the studies were started and the study grant was requested. The student may not be married or legally cohabited as an additional condition.
This statute provides the student with the advantage that, when determining income, only one's own income is taken into account even if the student is still home. Influence on other benefits
The statute does not affect the child benefit or the tax is charged to the parents. The tax payable depends on the amount earned in 1 year. The right to child benefit does not depend on the amount earned, but the number of hours worked.
